Lōkahi welcomes Ka‘alekualoloa. Our newest canoe was given her name and blessed in a ceremony conducted by Kahu Kordell Kekoa. Melanie Soares began the proceedings with a beautiful and moving oli embracing each island and the surrounding ocean waters: ‘āina and kai together making Hawai‘i. Then Kahu Kekoa brought Lōkahi paddlers together with our new canoe to give her the name Ka‘alekualoloa in an all-embracing pule. Finally, she took her maiden voyage with Head Coach Mike Cushnie steering.
The name Ka‘alekualoloa means, literally, “a long-backed wave” and describes a long wave that, unbroken, has traveled a long way across the ocean. On the surface, the wave moves slowly and smoothly but the power under the water that propels it is immense. When these waves do reach land and break, they are acknowledged as the most powerful waves that exist; in Hawaiian stories, it is used as the boast of a hero since it describes long standing endurance and strength, but patiently waiting.
Mahalo nui loa to all who participated in Lōkahi’s first community service event this season!
Lōkahi’s enthusiasm to mālama o ke kai (care for our ocean) was inspiring! Even though this was a small effort, without much planning involved - Lōkahi was well represented with 15 participants! And as always, Lōkahi had FUN!
Volunteers earnestly collected invasive algae in Maunalua Bay and then paddled it back to shore where it was weighed and dumped into a truck bed to be sent to recycling into compost.
It was a most enjoyable way to spend our Memorial Day holiday. We even ended it with our traditional “IMUA LŌKAHI” kāhea (call)! Look for pictures highlighting our adventure soon!
We, the Lamakū Committee, were just as thrilled to receive interest from those of you who could not make it out to this project, but wanted to participate in future activities. We will keep you posted!
Mahalo to those members who volunteered and served at our booth at the GAR Expo, and to the hardy souls who set up and struck the GAR t-shirt tent at the event itself. Special thanks to Elizabeth for co-ordinating this and to Carol for providing the opportunity. We had many interested people sign up, including potential youth paddlers. While Chelsea Clinton made an appearance, I'm afraid we couldn't get her to sign up.
Mahalo to all members who came down to the site and joined in our potluck on Sunday. The weather was fine, we enjoyed an adundance of great food and beverages, and the company was outstanding. Maile had t-shirts and other Lōkahi merchandise available for purchase and we even got some business done.
Head Coach Mike passed out this year's practice schedule and the 2008 pre-season distance and regatta schedules. Mike also discussed club expectations and crew selection criteria.
Mahalo to the many members who registered for the new year. The 2008 Lōkahi application form is available for you to fill out and print.
Lōkahi is grateful for your continuing support.
We are looking for more volunteers to help with our Recruiting Committee and many others:
Merchandising, Lōkahi Regatta, Social Committee, Adult & Youth Fundraiser, Sponsorship, Travel & Landscaping.
If you are interested, please contact our VP Sarah Blane at vp@lokahicanoeclub.org.
Once again, a BIG Mahalo to everyone!
Sincerely,
Lōkahi Canoe Club Officers
